Книга Елизавета. Золотой век Англии
Уникальная беллетризованная биография могущественной королевы Англии Елизаветы I, помещенная в широкий контекст истории Англии с 1584 по 1603 год. Другие биографы Елизаветы освещали преимущественно ранние этапы ее правления, лишь кратко упоминая о событиях, произошедших после того, как ей исполнилось 50 лет. Между тем это и становление Англии как «владычицы морей», и путешествие Фрэнсиса Дрейка, и основание в Северной Америке первого английского поселения, и деятельность Уолтера Рэли, и уничтожение испанской Непобедимой армады в Гравелинском морском сражении в 1588 году. Преследование и казнь Марии Стюарт вызвали дальнейший виток ожесточенного соперничества между Англией и Испанией — этой причинно-следственной связи никто до Джона Гая не уделял пристального внимания. Обрисованы также малоизвестные грани психологического портрета Елизаветы I — она не только могущественная королева, но и уязвимая женщина, впадшая в последние годы своей жизни в меланхолию, граничащую с неуверенностью в себе и даже настоящей депрессией. Крупнейший специалист по истории Тюдоров, Джон Гай использовал множество письменных источников, часть из которых исследовалась впервые (в особенности рукописные государственные документы, касающиеся отношений между Англией и другими европейскими державами). Проработаны также около 30 неопубликованных писем самой Елизаветы, черновики и дневниковые записи, отражающие ее внутренний мир, сохранившие ее мысли и эмоции — все то, что не было и не могло быть отражено в официальных источниках. Те документы, которые исследователи прежде использовали в переводах, Гай стремился найти в оригинале. Именно в этом и заключается главная особенность книги, отличающая ее от всех остальных рассказов о Елизаветинской эпохе — Золотом веке в истории Англии.
