В действительности это то же самое, что и Джексоновская альтернатива, которую, похоже, выбрали Саймондс и Эдриан, а именно: «деятельность высших центров и ментальные состояния – это одно и то же или разные стороны одной и той же субстанции».
Я рад, что профессор Гендель сослался на дуализм в своем «Вводном слове». В любом случае, как ученый я отвергаю такой подход, когда каждому необходимо быть либо монистом, либо дуалистом, поскольку это ведет к «закрытому мышлению». Ни одному ученому не следует начинать с такого одностороннего выбора или заниматься исследованиями, опираясь на свои предубеждения. И все же, поскольку окончательное решение в обсуждаемой нами области знания, похоже, не будет достигнуто до того времени, когда умрет самый юный из читателей этой книги, то каждому из нас следует выбрать для себя личную позицию (веру, религию) и образ жизни, не ожидая от науки последнего слова в отношении сущности человеческого разума.
В обычной жизни понятия «разум» и «душа человека» воспринимаются как аналоги. Я воспитывался в христианской семье и всегда верил, что дело первично, что в этом мире для меня есть работа и что существует высший замысел, в котором всем сознательным индивидам отведена определенная роль. Реальна ли такая вещь, как связь между человеком и Богом, и может ли энергия поступать к разуму человека после его смерти из внешнего источника, каждый должен решать для себя сам. Наука пока не дала ответа на эти вопросы.
