Кому-то покажется, что эти перемены лишили мореплавание романтики и очарования, однако для многих море никогда никакой романтики в себе и не таило — разве что надежду на лучшую долю в чужих краях, добрые вести из-за границы или просто прибыль. Рабам, кули, беднякам, завербовавшимся по кабальным контрактам, оно не обещало и этого. В разных странах мира с моря ждали нашествия иноземцев, чуждых идей, смертельных болезней и безжалостных завоевателей из дальних стран. В то же время теперь мы знаем, что море, при всем его коварстве и безжалостности, достаточно уязвимо для воздействия, которое нашим предкам так же сложно было бы вообразить, как корабли и другие технологии, это воздействие оказывающие.
Мореплавание — одно из древнейших коллективных занятий, достоинства которого прекрасно сформулировал византийский историк Георгий Пахимер:
Мореплавание — благородное дело, полезное человечеству как никакое другое. Оно помогает сбыть излишки и восполнить недостачу, осуществить невозможное. Оно объединяет жителей разных земель и любой негостеприимный остров может присовокупить к материку, оно обогащает мореплавателя знаниями, оно учит манерам, оно несет людям согласие и цивилизацию, оно укрепляет дух, выявляя в человеке все самое человеческое.

Выгоды мореплавания распределяются не так равномерно, как предполагал Пахимер, но у нас есть все основания считать, что большинство хотя бы подспудно с этим оптимистичным утверждением согласится. Сегодня, спустя восемь веков, мы добавляем к нему общемировую заботу о море и растущее осознание, что история мореплавания может послужить источником бесценных знаний о мире и о самих себе.
