Правила поведения у человекообразных обезьян диктуются необходимостью находить общий язык и поддерживать мир в сообществе. Взаимное доверие воспитывается в играх, когда молодые шимпанзе устраивают кучу-малу и понарошку кусают руки и ноги друг друга (фото вверху). Если игра становится слишком жесткой, приходится извиняться, иначе продолжения не будет. Нарушение социальных правил вызывает протест; вот молодой шимпанзе бегает с протянутой рукой и просит вернуть ягоды, которые кто-то у него стащил (фото внизу).
Шимпанзе владеют богатым репертуаром утешающих жестов, цель которых — успокоить при необходимости себя и других. Две самки, обнявшись, наблюдают за напряженной схваткой членов группы (фото вверху); самка, чтобы помириться с доминантным самцом после драки с ним, целует его в губы (фото внизу).
Усыновление чужих детенышей — распространенная форма альтруизма как у человека, так и у других животных. Самка шимпанзе с недостаточной лактацией потеряла уже несколько малышей, прежде чем я научил ее кормить из бутылочки усыновленного младенца Рузи (фото внизу). После этого она выкормила из бутылочки не только Рузи, но и следующего, собственного отпрыска. Ответом на мои уроки стала непреходящая благодарность этой самки.
