Тем не менее, если говорить о трансформациях, совершенных в современной медицине новыми мощными двигателями прогресса и недавно разработанными многочисленными видами топлива, существует один особый ингредиент исцеления, которому нельзя позволить исчезнуть. Этим ингредиентом, простым и неизменным, является участие; оно рассеяно в тишине палат и в кабинете врача. Здесь, в чертогах безопасности, заключается сделка, которая в своем фундаментальном смысле является актом дарения и касается элементарных отношений, возникающих между двумя людьми, когда они слушают, прикасаются и разговаривают. Достигает ли она кульминационной точки при трансплантации органа или в нескольких словах ободрения, единственное, что я ощущаю в это мгновение, – благоговение, потому что процесс исцеления – это единение врача и пациента, в котором один человек имеет привилегию помочь другому.
