Однако эти расхождения не умаляют основного тезиса второй части книги: могущество местной политики плюс приобщение все более широких социальных слоев к грамоте, плюс сохранение устойчивого экономического равновесия, плюс начавшееся вмешательство государства, обусловленное налогообложением, развитием сообщения и, опять-таки, грамотности, – все это способствовало формированию почти по всей Европе политического устройства, допускавшего вовлеченность и участие. Именно этим характеризуется последнее столетие Средних веков, а не теми якобы позднесредневековыми явлениями, о которых твердят многие учебники, – кризис, тревожность, Возрождение, предчувствие надвигающейся Реформации и завоевания европейцами других континентов. И это одна из основных составляющих того наследия, которое Средние века оставили будущим поколениям.
